Oakfield Town Manager Celebrates 52 Years — The Oakfield town officials hosted a celebration on Saturday, July 17 at the Community Center for Pansy Burton in honor of her recent 90th birthday and her 52nd year as Oakfield Town Clerk.

Fort Fairfield girl winner of Shopping Carnival award — Miss Betty Burtsell, Fort Fairfield, won the all-expense Bermuda trip offered as grand prize of the three-day gala Caribou Shopping Carnival held here Thursday through Saturday of last week.

Dr. N. Varnum appointed to the manpower pool — A Presque Isle optometrist, Dr. Norman Varnum, was appointed a member of a manpower pool within the Professional Development Division of the American Optometric Association, it was announced by the organization’s president, Dr. B. J. Shannon of Mauston, Wisconsin.

New business opens their doors — Caribou Hardware opened its doors three weeks ago joining the more than 80 other Trustworthy Hardware stores in Maine. Toby Cormier, wonder, worked as a manager of a Trustworthy store in Van Buren for nine years.

Sylvanus Davis retired after 29 years with police — Sylvanus Davis, an officer with the Presque Isle Police Department for almost 29 years, retired from his duties. Davis started as a patrolman with the force following a stint with the U.S. Border Patrol.

Marquis, still graceful at 103 — Lillian Marquis retired from dancing at 50, but the former dance teacher still asks when she sees a familiar face, “Were you one of my students?” Marquis celebrated her 103rd birthday with a party Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Ridgewood Estates.

Jackett heads for All-American Soap Box Derby — With his Soap Box Derby car already shipped to Akron, Ohio, Houlton’s Jeremy Jackett hasn’t really thought too much about the 62nd All-American Derby Race…until now, however it’s been a different story for his parents, Sharon and Blaine Jackett of Houlton.
A cold front approaches tonight and crosses the region Thursday with scattered showers and thunderstorms for the SJV. Isolated strong to severe storms are also possible today.
