CARIBOU, Maine — In their only home meet of the year, the Caribou wrestling team had one wrestler earn a gold medal Saturday, while another took silver and two others bronze.
Evan Michaud was the winner in the 106 lb. division by stopping Foxcroft Academy’s Brandon Weston in the championship.
Michaud improved to 16-6 on the season as Caribou coach Chico Hernandez said the freshman continued to impress.
Alton Pelletier, competing in the 170 division, was stopped by Billy Brock of Foxcroft, one of the top wrestlers in Eastern Maine, in the finals but grabbed second place.
Dustin DeMerchant fell to Foxcroft’s Michael Pendriss by a 9-1 decision in the 195 semifinals for third place.
“He seems to be more aggressive and making the mental improvements in these areas,” Hernandez said. ”He fought a good match (against Pendriss) and never quit.”
Jandreau also placed third in the 120 weight class.
“He is doing better all the time and if we can tweak his wrestling some with more intensity and eliminate some of the mistakes he is making, he will be a factor in the upcoming championship matches,” said his coach.
Jarred Jordan placed fourth in 285 after having to take on two of the top-ranked competitors in eastern Maine.
Eric Simon, Axios Gerakaris and Lucas Doucette were Viking wrestlers who missed the meet due to injuries.
Teams competing in Caribou were Foxcroft, PCHS and Dexter.
“The hard work is starting to pay off and we are making gains,” Hernandez said.
The Penobscot Valley Conference championships are next and will be held Saturday at Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln.
