Viking spring athletes earn recognition from conference

The Penobscot Valley Conference handed out its post-season awards recently, and several local athletes gained recognition.
In Class B softball, Presque Isle’s Carly Bell earned a spot on the first team.
She was joined by Rachel Martin and Karah Hussey, both of Old Town; Karli Thebarge and Allessa Oakes, both of Hermon; Shelby O’Neil, Hannah Shaw and Sierra Myrick, all of Mount Desert Island; and Emily Higgins of Foxcroft Academy.
Earning honorable mention were Brittany Cousins and Kayla Madden, both of Old Town; Jasmine Durant and Karrie O’Donnell, both of John Bapst; Shaniah Haskell of Hermon and Leah Stevens of Ellsworth.
An all-academic team member from the region was PI’s Shea Brown.
Martin was named player and pitcher of the year and Presque Isle’s Terry Cummings was selected as coach of the year.
For baseball, Saul Nunez of Presque Isle and Caribou’s Matt Curry were named to the first team. Joining them were Conor Maguire of Ellsworth, Eric Hoogterp of Old Town, Jon Phelps of MDI, Connor Farmer of Hermon, Tommy Burns of John Bapst and Hunter Law and Abe Simpson, both of Foxcroft.
Caribou’s Sean Sadler and Matt Milliard and Presque Isle’s Tyler Seeley was part of the second team, which also included Nick Guerrette of Hermon, Steve Hanscom of MDI, Joe Archambault and Justin Gagnon, both of John Bapst; and Tyler Young of Old Town.
Caribou’s Curry, Herbert and Milliard and Presque Isle’s Josh Gordon, Frank Nunez and Saul Nunez were all-academic selections.
Maguire was named player of the year, Hanscom pitcher of the year and Hermon’s Matt Kinney was chosen as coach of the year.
Making the girls’ first team in tennis singles were Sara Gilson of Presque Isle, Sarah Storgaard of John Bapst and Madeline Cook of MDI.
Caribou’s Erin Patton was on the second team for singles players, joining Michaela Peersson of Old Town and Olivia Mora of Ellsworth.
In doubles, making the first team was the Wildcat duo of Michelle Cawley and Lora Ireland. Also on the first team were Sierra Bloom and Mackenzie Myers of MDI.
Caribou’s Bria Judd and Conner Spencer made the second team in doubles, along with Lauren Hale and Josie Schmale of Ellsworth.
Cook and Storgaard were named co-players of the year and Ben Rowell of MDI was the coach of the year.
On the boys’ side, Liam Hughes of Presque Isle, Luke Horton of MDI and Evan Toothaker of Ellsworth were on the first team in singles.
Making the second team were Brendan Cyr of Caribou, Ben Haslam of Ellsworth and Ryan Ding of John Bapst.
For the doubles first team, Jae Jeong and Quest Teichman of John Bapst and Anthony Gardner and Jarred Whitney of Ellsworth were the duos selected. Making up the second team were David Carmack and Charlie Hanscob of John Bapst and John Fendl and Kyle Lima of Ellsworth
Horton was named player of the year and Caribou’s John Habeeb shared coach of the year honors with Brian Higgins of Ellsworth.
Making the all-academic tennis team from Caribou was Clara Collins, while Lora Ireland of Presque Isle was also an all-academic choice.
In girls’ track and field, Caribou’s Alissa Irving made the first team in the 1,600-meter race walk, while Kate Finnemore of Caribou made the second team in the race walk and Presque Isle’s Regan Nelson made the second team in the javelin.
Mitchell St. Peter of Caribou was a first team selection in the race walk and teammate Austin Griffeth made the second team in the same event. Also on the second team were the Vikings’ Emilio Garcia in both the 110 and 300 hurdles and in the long jump and Mitchell Ayotte in the triple jump.
Making the all-academic team from Caribou were Samantha Camy, Sara Hamlin, Chaya Karunasiri, Alex Murchison, Taylor Hartley, Keith Draper, Jessika Kovach, Kameron Manter and Daniel Powers.
