CARIBOU — The Jefferson Cary Foundation Capital Campaign Project is in the midst of an $800,000 fund-raising campaign for the renovation/construction of a new Women’s Imaging Center at Cary Medical Center. Recently local businesses have presented donations and sponsored events around the community to raise funds for the new center.

The facility will feature state-of-the-art digital mammography and stereotactic biopsy equipment. With the focus on patient comfort, convenience and privacy, the center will be staffed by specially trained mammography technologists who will engage patients in a “navigation process” that helps them through their procedures, whether a routine screening mammogram or a diagnostic exam. Making sure the patient has the best possible experience with support from their medical team is the main objective of the center.

All throughout the month of October, a beautiful pink rose, donated courtesy of Phil’s Florist and Greenhouses of Caribou, is being given to every woman having a mammogram at Cary. This year is the 28th anniversary of observing the month of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The month is set aside to increase awareness of breast cancer issues and encourage women to know the facts about breast cancer.

“Having regular mammograms is so important for women, and we are excited about the construction of our Women’s Imaging Center here at Cary,” said Patty Corriveau, owner of Phil’s Florist. “We wanted to show our support of the project and felt what better way than to honor women with a pink rose.”

The Rally for the Cure golf tournament was held on Aug. 11 at the Caribou Country Club. About 50 golfers participated in the four-person scramble. Partnering with the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the tournament, the Caribou Country Club has raised approximately $10,000 over the past five years to be used for breast cancer awareness and prevention efforts. This year’s $1,500 proceeds from tournament play were presented to the Jefferson Cary Foundation for the new imaging center. Daigle Oil Company and Pines Health Services also sponsor the tournament.

Daigle Oil Company also provided a separate donation to the center recently, along with Aroostook County Federal Savings & Loan.
