To the editor:
I would like to remind the residents of Madawaska Lake that they have an opportunity to get their unorganized township T16 R4 renamed to Madawaska Lake by voting on November 3.
Their ballot contains a question asking if they wish to rename T16 R4 to Madawaska Lake. I hope they take this opportunity to do so. This area has always been known as Madawaska Lake, but the county cannot put up signs recognizing the area as Madawaska Lake since the official name of the area is T16 R4 and that is the only name that can be used on signs.
Rep. Ken Theriault got a bill passed in the last legislature that would allow the residents to change the name. This election is the result of that bill.
Changing the name would not change the legal status of the unorganized township, nor the tax structure. It would simply allow the area to be designated as Madawaska Lake. As the owner/operator of rental cabins and an RV park at Madawaska Lake, I know having signs identifying the area as Madawaska Lake may be helpful for tourism. Please vote for the name change.
