STACYVILLE — Flag Day, June 14th is a special day to honor America’s flag. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1916, proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day. This date commemorates the adoption of the flag made by a resolution on that day of the 2nd Continental Congress in 1777.
The flag flies proudly, but because of nature, she also becomes tattered and torn. When a flag becomes worn, it should be replaced and the old flag retired. The United States Code Title 4, Chapter 1, Paragraph K states: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”
In keeping with a tradition of Sherman Area Memorial VFW Post 2299 and Its Ladies Auxiliary, a Flag Retirement Ceremony will be held on June 14 at 7 p.m. at the Post home located in Stacyville.
The public is invited to attend this very moving tribute as Old Glory is retired in ceremony. Anyone who has flags they wish to retire, but cannot attend the ceremony, can contact Commander Wayne Guiggey at 365-4832, Aux. President Allison Roy at 365-4263, or any other member of the Post or Auxiliary. Post members would be happy to pick up the flags so that they may be disposed of properly.
Remember, Old Glory has been flying for more that 200 years and will be flying for many, many years in the future. VFW Post 2299 and its Auxiliary express appreciation to all those who showing their patriotic pride.
