Local squads fare well in opening round of playoffs

HOULTON, Maine — The preliminary round of the postseason featured a couple of upsets for teams statewide, but for the most part the higher seeds held true for Aroostook County squads.

The following is a recap of Tuesday’s preliminary round, as well as pairings for the quarterfinals, tentatively scheduled for Thursday, June 9.

Softball

No. 7 Katahdin (11-4) defeated No. 10 Ashland (score not reported) in a Class D North prelim. With the victory, Katahdin advances to the quarterfinals, tentatively slated for Thursday, with the Cougars traveling to face No. 2 Woodland (11-3) of Baileyville. Ashland ends its season with a 6-9 overall record.

No. 13 East Grand (2-11) fell to No. 4 Stearns 19-1 in Class D North. The Minutemen (12-5) now face No. 5 Penobscot Valley (10-5), who advanced with a 11-1 win over No. 12 Shead.

In Class B North, Presque Isle (7-10 overall) lost to No. 8 Winslow (10-7) in Tuesday’s prelim round. The final score and details were not reported. Also in Class B North, No. 15 Caribou (0-17 overall) lost to No. 2 Ellsworth 15-0 Monday and were eliminated.

In Class C North, No. 6 Houlton played Monday beating No. 11 Fort Kent 14-1. The Shires travel to No. 3 Sumner of Sullivan Thursday for a 10:30 a.m. quarterfinal.

Baseball
In Class D North, Wisdom is the top-ranked team in the region. The Pioneers finished 9-3 on the season and hosted No. 16 Jonesport-Beals (3-9) Tuesday. Wisdom was victorious 8-3 and now hosts No. 8 Southern Aroostook Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Also in Class D North, No. 11 Hodgdon upset No. 6 Katahdin 6-3 Tuesday. With the win, Hodgdon (9-6 overall) advances to the quarterfinals where the team will face No. 3 Bangor Christian (13-4 overall) Thursday at 3 p.m. BC advanced with a 10-0 victory over No. 14 Van Buren (5-10). Katahdin ends its season with a 10-5 overall record.

In Class D North, No. 9 Southern Aroostook (8-7) upset No. 8 Penobscot Valley 8-3. With the win, the Warriors travel to take on No. 1 Wisdom (10-3 overall) Thursday at 1 p.m.

Madawaska finished 10th in the region and traveled to No. 7 Lee Academy (9-8) on Tuesday. The Owls fell 11-1 in the preliminary round, ending their season with an 8-7 overall record.

Fort Fairfield (6-9 overall) finished 12th in the region and traveled to No. 5 Woodland (13-2) Tuesday for a prelim. The Tigers fell 10-0 and were eliminated.
No. 3 Bangor Christian defeated No. 14 Van Buren 10-0. The Crusaders end their season with a 5-10 overall record.

No. 15 Washburn/Easton (3-9) lost to No. 2 Stearns 26-4 in a Class D North prelim. Stearns improved to (12-5) with the win.

In Class C North, No. 2 Fort Kent (13-4) defeated No. 15 Narraguagus 12-0 in the preliminary round and now faces either No. 7 Central or No. 10 Penquis Valley in the quarterfinals.

No. 5 Houlton defeated No. 12 Calais 21-0 in five innings Tuesday. The Shires (11-4 overall) travel to No. 4 Orono (12-5) on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the University of Maine at Orono for a quarterfinal contest.

Against Calais Tuesday, Silas Graham pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, with seven strikeouts. Colin Moody tossed two relief innings, allowing no hits or walks, with four strikeouts.

The Shires bashed 14 hits and drew 11 walks against the Blue Devils. Garrett Harvey, Thadon Gentle, and Nolan Hodgdkins led the team with each tallying a double.

In Class B North, No. 10 Caribou (5-12 overall) lost to No. 7 Mount Desert Island (9-8) of Bar Harbor 14-9 Monday in a preliminary playoff game. Also in Class B North, No. 15 Presque Isle (1-16 overall) lost to No. 2 Old Town (11-6) in a preliminary round game 11-0.
