Credit union donates more than $18,000 to battle hunger

FORT KENT and ASHLAND, Maine — Acadia Federal Credit Union recently raised and disbursed more than $18,000 to help feed Maine’s hungry. Fundraising efforts were part of the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger.

Fourteen food pantries and food assistance programs in northern and eastern Maine benefited from Acadia FCU’s fundraising efforts.

“Our lobbies were closed and there was a lot of uncertainty during the pandemic,” said Alison Smart, Acadia FCU marketing manager and Ending Hunger Campaign coordinator. “That created a bit of a setback in our 2020 fundraising efforts, but we still found ways to reach our members and rally our staff for the cause. We are proud of our contributions to this annual campaign and the meaningful impact we have in our communities.”

A total of $18,323.53 was divided and sent to the following agencies: First Assembly of God Food Pantry, St. John Vianney Parish Food Pantry, Aroostook Area Agency on Aging/Meals on Wheels program, Ashland Food Pantry, Greater Fort Kent Ecumenical Food Pantry, Notre Dame du Mont Carmel Food Pantry, Our Lady of the Valley, SAD 33 Take Home Program, Seeds of Hope Food Pantry, Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, Brewer Area Food Pantry, The Salvation Army of Bangor, Manna Ministries Food Pantry, and Fish River Rural Health Food Shelf.

Fundraising efforts have continued throughout 2021, including a spring raffle to win various outdoor patio furniture items, bi-monthly popcorn sales, monthly jeans day for Acadia staff, and an ongoing bottle drive.

Recyclable bottles for the cause can be dropped off and donated anytime at Caron’s Redemption Center in Fort Kent. Acadia FCU is also accepting monetary donations online at https://campaignforendinghunger.org/acadiafcu/

Based on current standings, 2021 fundraising totals are projected to exceed 2020 results.
