County runners tackle Aroostook Invitational

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Aroostook County cross-country runners converged on Presque Isle, Tuesday, Oct. 8, just three days after competing in one of the largest events of the season Oct. 5.

The Caribou boys took home top team honors with a score of 19, followed by Washburn, 47; Presque Isle, 88; Maine School of Science and Mathematics, 98; Madawaska, 137; and Fort Kent, 147.

For the girls, the Vikings were also victorious with a team score of 38, followed by MSSM, 61; Fort Kent, 63; Presque Isle, 83; and Washburn, 122.

Houlton/GHCA did not have enough runners to score as a team in either the boys or girls races.

“The Aroostook County League Championships were a little less competitive today as several teams are coming off the Festival of Champions surge of energy and still recovering,” Houlton coach Chris Rines. “Five of the teams, Caribou, Presque Isle, Fort Kent, Washburn, and Houlton had attended the (Festival of Champions) meet in Belfast Saturday and to come back to a championship race so soon just was not ideal. Madawaska, Fort Fairfield, and MSSM did not attend Belfast.”

Rines said several of Houlton’s runners had a few nagging injuries or were battling illnesses over the past week.

“As expected our times did not continue the trend of improvement we have seen meet after meet so far this season,” Rines said. “We did however, manage to have all our kids improve their times from when they had run this course earlier this season which is a testament to how far their endurance and perseverance has come.”
