Organizers cancel Special Olympics Spring Games

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Because of the inclement weather expected later this week, the Special Olympics Area Management Team “made the very tough decision to officially cancel this year’s Special Olympics Spring Games.”

It was the second time this month that the weather affected the organization’s plans. The 43rd annual Spring Games originally were scheduled for Friday, May 10, at the Johnson Athletic Complex at Presque Isle Middle School but then postponed due to rain to Thursday, May 16.

Organizers announced their latest decision to cancel altogether on Tuesday afternoon.

Every year, scores of coaches, parents, aides, school officials and athletes from across Aroostook County gather at the athletic complex for a day of competition in such categories as the standing long jump, 100-meter run, softball throw and relay races. Organizers had expected more than 300 athletes from Houlton to Fort Kent to participate.
