St. John Valley weather for May 3-9, 2023
3-Day Outlook: Wednesday, May 3-Friday, May 5
The persistent broad upper-level low that has dominated the weather in the Northeast will move across Pennsylvania today then out to sea as it opens up into an upper wave. However, disturbances circulating around its broad expanse will bring clouds and a chance for showers over the course of the day into the evening.
Chilly temperatures are expected with the zero-level at about 3,000 feet, making for a cloudy, damp day in Fort Kent and vicinity (indeed the record minimum high temperature for May 3 is 40 degrees set in 1974). Today’s high tops out at about 45 degrees with east winds in the 10-11 mph range. Less than one-tenth an inch rainfall is expected.
Tonight, cloudy skies with scattered showers this evening will give way to isolated showers overnight. Low temperatures will dip into the mid-30,s meaning a few snow showers may mix in during the overnight period, particularly in the North Woods/Allagash with little/no accumulation expected. A northeast wind in the 6-to-8-mph range is anticipated.
Thursday will feature mostly cloudy skies with with breezy northeast winds 10 to 15 mph gusting in the 20-to-25-mph range. Showers will still be possible, with the Valley on the far northern boundary of the upper-level low’s circulation as it moves into the Atlantic. Rainfall totals in the couple-hundredths-of-an-inch range are possible. Thursday’s high will climb into the low 50s. Thursday night, mostly cloudy skies will become partly cloudy after midnight as high pressure begins to build down into the St. John Valley with any rain showers waning during the evening/overnight period. Thursday night’s low will be in the upper 30s with winds becoming north 5-8 mph overnight.
Friday, high pressure building down from Hudson Bay will bring mostly sunny skies to the region with a daytime high reaching the lower 60s. North winds will remain breezy around 11 mph with gusts to around 21 mph. Friday night looks partly cloudy with a low in the mid-30s and light northwest winds.
