Agency on Aging Marks Older Americans Month

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Staying well allows us to live better lives. Through group classes, informational sessions, and public events, the Aroostook Agency on Aging staff and volunteers share topics and techniques that are intended to help all people age well.

As part of Older Americans Month and in recognition of the Agency’s 50th anniversary, staff and volunteers offer programs developed to help older persons and their care partners succeed and thrive in their own homes.

Established in 1963, Older Americans Month is celebrated every May. Led by the Administration  for Community Living and in partnership with Agencies on Aging, OAM is a time for citizens of all  ages to acknowledge the contributions and achievements of older Americans, highlight important trends, and strengthen their commitment to honoring our older citizens.

This year’s theme, Aging Unbound, offers an opportunity for residents of northern Maine to explore a  wide range of aging experiences and to promote the importance of enjoying independence and fulfillment by paving their own paths as they age.

“This May, join our Agency as we recognize our 50th anniversary and the 60th birthday of OAM. We are holding community events, educational presentations, and wellness classes in May and throughout the year so we can all participate in activities that promote Aging Unbound and challenge the narrative on  aging,” said Executive Director Joy Barresi Saucier.

Older Americans Month kicks off with several programs focused on family caregivers and the critical role they play in helping older persons to “age unbound” and ends with Community Hot Dog Roasts in several locations across Aroostook County.

The entire calendar of May events can be viewed on the Agency website at  https://www.aroostookaging.org/events or by calling the organization at 764-3396 or toll-free at 1-800- 439-1789.
