Turkey time -- The smell of the favored Thanksgiving bird penetrated the air at Paul’s Gas on a Friday afternoon in 1997 as the Dr. Levesque School kindergarten class arrived to have their Thanksgiving feast. With their paper Pilgrim hats and handsomely decorated placemats, they were anxious to give thanks and eat some of that delicious turkey. Dave Dumond, cook at Paul’s Gas, prepared the13 pound turkey for the class. The students had agreed to modify the traditional Thanksgiving menu to include some of Mr. Paul’s fries. 50 Years Ago — Nov. 22, 1972

    Zayre’s opens  — Zayre will officially open its giant department store on Friday, Nov. 23, 1972. The new store, located at Fox Street and 25th Avenue, is larger than a football field, and will feature nationally advertised merchandise ranging from home furnishings and automotive supplies to the latest apparel for the whole family.

As part of the opening, Zayre “fly-in cashiers” will be arriving from surrounding states to staff the registers for the first days. The manager of the store is Louis Lamont. His assistant manager will be Michael Brown. The new store will be the eighth in the state for Zayre.

25 Years Ago — Nov. 26, 1997

WWII veteran receives medals — Close to 53 years after serving more than four years in the Army during World War II, veteran Edgar Voisine, 79, of Wallagrass has finally received his long-overdue medals and his Bronze Star citation. Voisine stated he was wounded for the second time just two days before the end of the war. He was in the hospital when he was officially discharged from the service and probably because of this he never received his medals. For his first injury Voisine’s parents received his Purple Heart.

10 Years Ago — Nov. 21, 2012 

Theriault took third at the Florida Cup race — Fort Kent race car driver Austin Theriault competed at the Florida Governor’s cup on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna, Florida. Theriault found himself in second place midway through the race, but difficulties with his tires proved problematic for the young driver, who dropped down to the eighth position. Twelve laps later he was back into the fifth-place spot, and unofficially took fourth place. However, Theriault ended with an official third-place finish after the third-place finisher was disqualified.
