‘Grease’ soon to be the word in Fort Kent

FORT KENT, Maine — Break out the leather jackets and feelings of nostalgia. The musical “Grease” is coming to Fort Kent.

Fort Kent Community High School students will perform four showings of the universally famous musical at University of Maine at Fort Kent Fox Auditorium Nov. 3-5.

The story of Grease is so timeless in its popularity that the young actors performing the Fort Kent shows were well acquainted with it before being cast in their roles.

“I’ve seen it many, many times,” said Sadie Cairns, who will play the role of Sandy Olsson made famous by Olivia Newton John.

OLorin Braun, who is cast as bad boy Danny Zuko was first introduced to Grease like many young people nowadays, by watching the movie with his mother.

“She told me I needed to see it, that it was a classic,” Braun said.

Although the soundtrack of “Grease the Musical” differs slightly from the movie “Grease,” Director Doug Clapp has incorporated the most popular songs from the movie into the Fort Kent show.

“I really love the music. It’s catchy, it’s fun and you can’t help but dance to it,” Braun said.

Cairns, who first broke out onto the Fox Auditorium stage as a 10-year-old in the lead role of Annie, is a sophomore now and looking forward to the challenge of playing Sandy.

“This is very different from anything I’ve done before. It’s kind of like a grown up role for me. I’ve always been a little girl in plays so it’s very different,” she said.

Cairns said the song she will most enjoy singing is “Hopelessly Devoted to You.”

The show will also include some special guest stars. Fort Kent educator and former varsity boys basketball coach Derrick Cooper will perform the role of Vince Fontaine.

Fort Kent dean of students Steve Doucette and Clapp will assist students in rocking the crowd when they play real instruments to perform the song “Hand Jive.”

Grease will be performed at 6:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 3-5, at Fox Auditorium. There will also be a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for those under 18 and can be purchased from any drama club member, at the high school front office and at the door if not sold out prior to performances.
