50 Years Ago — March 23, 1972
Roland Desjardins bowls in sweepstakes — Roland Desjardins competed in the ninth annual Charles H. Milan Memorial Sweepstakes bowling tourney which was held at the Bangor Brewer Lanes in Brewer on April 7-9, 1972.
The local paid Desjardins’ expenses for the tournament which he won in 1969. The first place prize was $500 and a trophy and prizes were guaranteed for the first 30 place finishers.
25 Years Ago — March 19, 1997
Largest moose of the 1996 season — Arthur Wardwell, 80, of Albany Township fulfilled his lifetime dream of bagging a moose. Arthur had the distinction of shooting a 1,205-pound moose state record for 1996 during his stay at Gardner’s Sporting Camp in Allagash. Arthur was the subpermittee of his daughter Jane.
Dancing with heart – Students, parents and staff at Grand Isle Elementary School got into the swing of things during a line dancing event as part of the school’s Valentine’s Day celebration.

More deer harvested in 2011 — Preliminary data show that 18,839 deer were harvested in Maine’s 2011 deer season, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. These include deer harvested by both resident and non-resident hunters. Data provided on the department’s website indicate that more than 80 deer were harvested throughout the St. John Valley this past season. Last year that number was nearly 100. Although the winter of 2010-2011 was touch, the report said, deer benefited from spring rains and a relatively early spring last year.
