Fort Kent schools in ‘soft lockdown’ to protect student

This story will be updated.

FORT KENT, Maine — Fort Kent Community High School and Valley Rivers Middle School, which are housed in the same building, entered into a soft lockdown Wednesday upon a recommendation from the Fort Kent Police Department.

SAD 27 Superintendent Ben Sirois posted on social media that police made the recommendation in order to protect a student at the school from a potentially dangerous individual trying to contact the student.

“There will be no visitors allowed at the school, nor will the students be going in and out throughout the day,” Sirois said.

Fort Kent Elementary School, which is located in a separate building on the same street as the high school and middle school, is also on a soft lockdown out of an abundance of caution.
