Fort Kent students enjoying fleet of bicycles

FORT KENT, Maine — Students enrolled in physical education classes at Fort Kent Community High School and Valley Rivers Middle School have an additional outdoor fitness activity, at least until the snow flies.

The school district purchased 20 new and almost new mountain bicycles and safety gear to go along with them.

“We needed ideas for socially distanced and COVID-19 friendly activities for our students,” Principal John Kaleta said. “Biking naturally socially distances individuals and provides for an excellent aerobic workout for our students in physical education classes.”

The mountain bikes were purchased with American Rescue Plan Esser II funds. The fleet includes some bicycles the Fort Kent Outdoor Center sold.

“Our Phys Ed classes and Outing Club are now taking advantage of these bikes,” Kaleta said.

“Helping our students build an appreciation and love for cycling can yield a lifetime of physical rewards and fun.”
