Fort Kent boys out hustle Van Buren for home field soccer win

FORT KENT, Maine — Fort Kent Community High School edged out Van Buren 2-1 Tuesday in a varsity boys soccer contest in Fort Kent.

The Warriors improved to 4-1 on the season with the win, while Van Buren fell to 1-1-5.

Van Buren struck first, less than three minutes into the game, when Crusader Sam Hebert scored with an assist by Henry Hebert.

The Crusaders didn’t hold their lead for long as Warrior Kaden Theriault capitalized on a free kick to rocket the ball from 30 yards into the Van Buren net seven minutes later.

“He has a strong kick,” Fort Kent team manager Angela Hebert said of Theriault.

Van Buren failed to recover and Warrior Caleb Lavertu kicked what turned out to be the game-winning goal with just over 25 minutes remaining in the first half with an assist from Wil Roy.

The defense on both teams held strong during the second half, which proved scoreless.
