Madawaska washes Washburn out in rainy back-to-back soccer matches

MADAWASKA, Maine — The Madawaska girls and boys varsity soccer teams dominated Washburn in back-to-back matches on Thursday evening — the girls winning 8-3 and the boys taking their game 12-1 in the rain.

The girls played first, dominating the younger Washburn team especially in the first half, putting up five unanswered goals. In the second, Washburn scored off of two shots and a penalty kick to get on the board.

The game was a particularly strong showing for Madawaska senior Chantal Ackley, who scored four of the Owls’ eight goals. Junior Taylor Pelletier put up two, with junior Haily Blanchette and Van Buren transplant Renee Lapointe also scoring one apiece. Washburn’s scorers were senior Tru Drost for two, and freshman Logan Curtis for one.

By the time the boys hit the field, the sun had gone down and the rain, which had been light throughout the girls’ match, picked up, soaking the players and spectators.

Undeterred by weather, the Owls plowed ahead, keeping near-constant offensive pressure on Washburn despite an aggressive effort from goalie Mitchell Dow.

For the Owls, juniors Carsen Cyr and Ian Beaulieu led scoring — netting four and three, respectively. Sophomore Nick Poitras scored two, while sole-senior Adam Gendreau and sophomores Chris Martin, Robbie Poiesz, Chris Boucher also contributed one each.

Midway through the second half, Beckam Vaughn denied the shutout, scoring the Beavers’ only goal of the night.
