Summer dogs to walk in support of Can-Am

FORT KENT, Maine — There may be no snow in sight, but plans are already underway for the 2022 Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Races in Fort Kent this coming winter.

The third annual Can-Am Dog-A-Thon to raise funds for the races will take place Saturday, Aug, 14, the weekend of the Fort Kent International Muskie Derby and Greater Fort Kent Area Chamber of Commerce Ploye Festival.

Pups and their people can register to walk around town in support of Can-Am.

Can-Am enthusiast Michelle Roy of Fort Kent organized the event.

“The Can-Am is definitely an event that puts our town on the map,” Roy said. “It is an event that people travel from all over to see, which is great for our businesses. It also brings our whole community together for a fun-filled weekend in the middle of our long winters.”

“I love how Fort Kent comes together to make it happen year after year with 500 volunteers who help us put on this world-class race,” Roy added.

The walk will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Fort Kent Municipal Building, continue to the historic Fort Kent Blockhouse and end at the First Mile Monument on Main Street.

All dogs must be leashed and the cost to participate in the walk is $10 per person/dog team.

Registration for the walk will take place between 6 and 6:30 p.m. on the day of the event, or can be accomplished online at the event Facebook page
