Van Buren garage fire extinguished without serious damage to nearby homes
VAN BUREN, Maine — A fire destroyed a garage on Main Street Wednesday evening, but was extinguished before it could do damage to nearby homes.
The fire closed traffic on U.S. Route 1 for a time.
The Van Buren Fire Department responded to a 911 call around 5 p.m. to find the detached garage at 345 Main St., owned by landlord Manley Lyons, engulfed in flames. The flames also damaged the siding of a neighbor’s house, but caused no further damage to nearby structures. However, the garage itself was destroyed.
At the time of the fire, nobody was inside the garage, and no injuries resulted from the blaze, fire officials stated. The Van Buren Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire, and may consult with the state Fire Marshal’s office, Chief Brian Caron said.
Grand Isle Fire Department responded to a mutual aid call, but the Van Buren firefighters were able to extinguish the fire on their own.
Responding to the call were Van Buren’s five newest department members, who joined the staff on Monday, Caron said. Among them are two returners to the department and three more first-time responders
