Long-running Pondfest celebration will return in July

WALLAGRASS, Maine — The popular Pondfest celebration will return to Wallagrass in July after a hiatus last summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Wallagrass/Soldier Pond Revitalization Committee hosts the family-friendly, daylong celebration each year to raise funds for community improvement efforts.

Pondfest took place annually for six years each summer through 2019. This year’s event will offer many activities familiar to Pondfest goers, including a parade.

People from all communities are welcome to attend Pondfest 2021, which takes place Saturday, July 3, near the boat landing on Church Street in the Soldier Pond area of Wallagrass.

Money raised from Pondfest 2021 will support the construction of a local veteran’s monument.

“We welcome and want veterans at the event and to be in the parade,” organizer Elaine Desjardins said.  “Anyone and anything is welcomed in the parade — big rigs, old and new vehicles, ATVs, motorcycles, bikes, but no political signs or pictures of any kind. There is no election and we are just getting over COVID some and we do not welcome that.”

Other events include meals featuring grilled hot dogs or hamburgers, including beans, chips and soda for $5 beginning at noon, live performances by local musicians throughout the day, and a frog race using real frogs at 2 p.m.

The plastic duck race along the Fish River will also return to Pondfest and ducks can be purchased at Lake Road Grocery in Wallagrass or the day of the event. Ducks will be dumped into the river at 4 p.m.

Children’s outdoor games will take place from 2 until 5 p.m. During this time, face painting, pony rides for tots, a baby goat petting zoo, and a mermaid dress-up activity with photos will also be available for children.

A raffle will take place for a quilt created by Mabel Pelletier of Allagash and a brand new 52-piece kitchenware set. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10, 5 for $15 or 7 for $20.

A fireworks show will be held at dusk.
