Central Aroostook tops Madawaska in Owls’ home opener

MADAWASKA, Maine — Central Aroostook out-hit Madawaska during the latter’s softball home opener April 27, coming out of the game with a decisive 16-6 victory.

Central Aroostook’s pitcher, freshman Kassidy Blackstone wavered in the first inning, hitting three batters, but quickly rallied to put on a strong performance for the rest of the game. Blackstone went on to lead offensively as well, with four runs scored.

For Madawaska, Chantal Ackely took the circle. Among the batters, Jessica Theriault led for the Owls with two runs.

Kevin Jackins, Central Aroostook’s coach said that he thought it was a “good first game” and was especially proud of the freshman pitcher and catcher duo, who he felt performed well.

Madawaska’s coaching staff is new this year, with former four-time Owls starters Hannah Nadeau and Desiree Belanger returning to mentor their former team. The home opener was their first game at the helm.

“I almost felt like I was playing at some points,” Nadeau said.

The coaches said they were happy with the outcome, though they want to see the Owls improve infield communication and heads-up defensive strategy.

“Everyone’s learning together,” Belanger said.
