SAD 27 board approves Mr. Eric Werntgen Scholarship Fund

FORT KENT, Maine — The SAD 27 board voted unanimously Monday, March 8, to approve a scholarship fund in memory of former district athletic director and physical education teacher Eric Werntgen.

Werntgen died unexpectedly in January.

Details of the Mr. Eric Werntgen Scholarship Fund are yet to be determined, but money raised from portions of basketball ticket sales and events such as a possible memorial 5-kilometer run will be given to the scholarship fund.

The scholarship will benefit outstanding Community High School seniors affiliated with athletics.

Superintendent Ben Sirois, who was also Werntgen’s brother-in-law, said many SAD 27 staff members have shared ideas about how best to honor Werntgen.

“Eric’s personality was larger than life and he impacted so many people,” Sirois said.

A portrait of Werntgen will also be mounted in the hallway near the high school gymnasium.

“This is one of the places he enjoyed most,” Sirois said.

Sirois said Werntgen would not have wanted the district to name a field or gymnasium after him.

“It just doesn’t fit his personality, but impacting the lives of kids is what he was all about and this is very appropriate, the scholarship fund,” Sirois said. “Naming things doesn’t fit his personality. Impacting the lives of kids is what he was all about.”
