Fort Kent boys triumph in rivalry match against Madawaska

MADAWASKA, Maine — In a varsity basketball showdown at Madawaska High School, the Fort Kent boys came out on top, 72-55, leaving the home team trailing on their senior night.

Normally a festive occasion at the school, the gym was unusually quiet, with just the two teams, support staff, and the parents of the Madawaska seniors, R.J. Minor and Robert Lausier, present. For the parents, who haven’t been able to watch games all season due to COVID-19 safety restrictions, it was the last chance to watch their sons play high school ball.

On the court, meanwhile, the night was intense. Madawaska Coach Dean Gendreau called it a “tale of two halves.”

Scoring was back and forth in the first quarter, but in the second, Madawaska began to pull ahead, controlling the ball well and entering into the second half with an eight point lead.

But Fort Kent was unphased, outshooting Madawaska in the third quarter to close the distance to three points. And the fourth quarter was all Fort Kent’s. A few breakaway layups on an unguarded Madawaska basket and a phenomenal showing from Fort Kent’s Austin Delisle, who put up 14 points in this quarter alone, sealed the deal.

Delisle racked up 39 points over the course of the game, scoring more than twice any other player. For Madawaska, Carsen Cyr led with 19 points followed closely by Lausier with 18.

On Saturday, Lausier scored his 1,000th career point.
