Jalbert Park Skating Rink opens in Fort Kent

FORT KENT, Maine — Some swirled gracefully and others proceeded slowly across the ice, but all seemed to enjoy a nice day outdoors on Sunday at the recently opened Jalbert Park Skating Rink in Fort Kent.

University of Maine at Fort Kent students Alexi Sarmis and Lisa Augustine visited the rink for the first time as a way for the couple to spend Valentine’s Day.

“We’re from South Africa so we are from sun, so anything that is like snow-related we try to experience while we’re at college,” Sarmis said. “It’s nice, we enjoy it.”

Although the fate of the ice rink has been the subject of town council meetings over the years, it is indeed open this winter and provides a low cost form of outdoor entertainment that seems especially relevant during this time of social distancing.

The outdoor ice-skating rink is located at Jalbert Park near the Fort Kent Elementary School off Pleasant Street.

The ice rink will be open for regular season hours 6-9 p.m. Fridays, 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Saturdays, and 1-4 p.m. Sundays.

During the February school break the week of Feb. 15-19, the rink will also be open 1-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday.

Concessions will not be available this year for safety reasons because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Admission is $1 per person and skate rentals are $2.

Season passes are available at $30 per family, and $20 for individuals, with skate rentals included in the season pass fees.

The town also offers snowshoe rentals for $3 per day. The snowshoes can be rented at the ice rink 1-4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays.

The Jalbert Park Skating Rink phone number is 207-834-5773.
