Madawaska girls take home first victory of season

MADAWASKA, Maine — The Madawaska girls soccer team defeated the Van Buren Crusaders, 8-0 Sept. 28 giving the Owls their first win of the season.

Chantal Ackley led the way for Madawaska with a three-goal effort. Chipping in two goals was Emma Pelletier while Taylor Pelletier, Morgan Corriveau and Aspen Schmelling each scored one. It was Schmelling’s first varsity goal as a high school freshman.

Madawaska girls soccer coach Tom Gerard said Van Buren did a fine job behind the goalkeeper of Abby Cormier. Morgan Corriveau, a senior on the team, added that Van Buren put up a good fight.

“I felt that the game went really well,” Corriveau said. “The team was talking well, and making the right passes. The best plays we did that worked well were crossing the ball, most of the time when we would cross the ball we would have a beautiful goal. It came with a lot of practice and we finally used it to our advantage last night.”

Madawaska was able to secure the shutout with six goals in the first half and two in the second.

“The way the team played last night was amazing,” Corriveau said. “We were all over the moon happy that we finally got the win and know to never give up because something good comes out of all the mistakes that are made.”
