Summer music returns as drive-in experience

MADAWASKA, Maine — Even COVID-19 couldn’t stop NorState’s Music in the Park this year, as it returns for a series of drive-in style concerts taking place at the multipurpose building in Madawaska.

Cars lined up in the grass in front of the trailer stage with windows down. Some spectators brought lawn chairs and sat next to their vehicles, having been directed to space out properly with the help of the Madawaska Recreation Department.

NorState’s Music in the Park, for the past several years, has taken place at the Bicentennial Park on St. Thomas St. in Madawaska. However, with social distancing guidelines in place, organizers and the recreation department teamed up to make sure to keep the summer entertainment scene alive.

“It’s fantastic for an event like that to be starting up again,” Recreation Director Sam Cyr said. “It was a surprisingly great turnout last Thursday.”

Organizers of the music series will go week by week to see if they can maintain this way of entertaining, and if so, concerts will be presented on Thursday evenings.

Correction: This story previously contained an inaccurate title for the summer concert series. Its full name is NorState’s Music in the Park.
