Woman dies in incident with Edmundston police

EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick — A 26-year-old woman from British Columbia has died following an incident in Edmundston, according to police.

Inspector Steve Robinson of the Edmundston Police Force said in a press statement that around 2:30 a.m. on the morning of June 4, the force received a request to check on the well-being of a woman at an apartment building on Canada Road in Edmundston.

The responding police officer was confronted at the scene by a woman holding a knife and making threats, Robinson said. The officer discharged a firearm. Although attempts were made to resuscitate the woman, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy has been scheduled, and the investigation is continuing, Robinson said.

As a means to ensure that police actions were appropriate and conformed to police procedural standards, the force has requested a review of the incident by an independent agency.

The New Brunswick RCMP is providing investigative and forensic support.
