Looking at myself first

To the editor:

For years I’ve read the Bible intellectually. I can see that from my notes in it. At the head of 2nd Thessalonians I once wrote: “80-100 A.D, Tabor 228.”

This definitely is not a religious note — it’s more like an historian’s remark.

Lately, I’ve noticed that  the Bible is not just for intellectual reading. It’s also meant for prayerful reading.

Pride resides in my intellect, but a more humble grasp of “The Word” may be had through prayerful reading.

In the opinion page of this newspaper I encounter a variety of  opinions regarding Christianity viewed from differing political perspectives. In politics I may strive to change others. In prayer I may be made to look at myself and my own behavior first. Ouch.
