Deployed Fort Kent dad reunites with daughter at her basketball game
FORT KENT, Maine — It was a long 10 months for the Roy family of Fort Kent while dad Alan Roy was deployed overseas with the Maine Army National Guard.
Roy, 50, is a full-time master sergeant in the Army National Guard and was recently deployed to Poland, Romania and Germany. But thanks to members of Roy’s unit, his family did their best to include him in the special moments he missed.
Members of Roy’s unit had made a poster board cutout of Roy’s image, which Roy’s wife and daughters included in important family photos such as their daughter Samantha’s senior night sports photos.
“We did have him in spirit at the games,” Jennifer Roy said.
And when he finally could come home, Roy’s wife and two daughters would have to wait one extra day to see him because a winter snowstorm hampered his return to northern Maine from Bangor International Airport.
“He flew in Friday, [Feb. 7], but due to the storm I couldn’t go and get him,” Jennifer Roy said.
Jennifer Roy and the couple’s youngest daughter seventh-grader Ellie Roy traveled to Bangor and picked him up the next day, but his route home was not direct.
There was one stop they had to make.
Samantha Roy, the couple’s oldest daughter and a Fort Kent Community High School senior, was scheduled to play a basketball game with her team in Fort Fairfield that Saturday afternoon.
The Roy family made a detour to the game. When Samantha Roy spotted her father, she rushed from the gym floor and into the stands to embrace him for the first time in nearly a year.
“She’s a daddy’s girl, and it was hard to have him away,” Jennifer Roy said. “He missed her prom, induction to the National Honor Society, and senior games for soccer and basketball.”
Now that Alan Roy is home, he will have the opportunity to attend plenty of his daughter’s sporting events in real life this coming fall. Although she is due to graduate from high school in June, Samantha was recruited by the University of Maine at Fort Kent Bengals soccer team while her father was deployed.
