Yee Haw! There’s BBQ in town

MADAWASKA, Maine — Madawaska has a new restaurant in town after the St. John Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Oct. 26 at Route 1 BBQ at the Gateway Motel.

While the restaurant is attached to the motel, the separate entrance leads patrons to a large dining area where they can sit and enjoy the eatery’s specialty smoked Memphis-style ribs, pulled pork, and soon-to-come brisket.

“Everything we have is uniquely different from the ribs to the pulled pork to the pulled chicken to beef brisket — something you can’t get up here in northern Maine,” said owner Ray Cooke.

The restaurant even boasts specials off the menu such as pulled pork nachos.

Ray and Sue Cooke decided to open the restaurant after friends told them they should pursue it.

“It started out as a hobby and then more friends kept coming over and then inviting more friends and then everybody was wanting it so all I would be doing was cooking every single weekend,” he said.

The restaurant is open 4-8 p.m. daily.

“Everybody said we had to take it to the next level and here we are,” Cooke said.
