St. Francis chicken barbecue brings hundreds together for community meal

ST. FRANCIS, Maine — The smokey scent of grilled chicken drifted through the air outside the St. Francis Community Center on a sunny Sunday, Sept. 8, as hundreds of people streamed into the building throughout the afternoon for the Friends of St. Francis fall annual Chicken Barbecue.

Brothers Tyler Jandreau, 12, and Ethan Jandreau, 9, were among the many volunteers who helped out at the barbecue.

 “Me and Ethan set up tables and chairs and we just help out with like cleaning and stuff,” Tyler Jandreau said. “It’s nice to see it because this is where I used to go to school.”

The boys’ father, Keith “Butch” Jandreau Jr. is a Friends of St. Francis member, and was one of a group of volunteer grill masters who cooked up 335 half-chickens on a charcoal barbecue pit outside the community center. 

Jandreau Jr. said Friends of St. Francis holds two barbecues per year to raise funds for local events such as an annual Family Fun Day and to purchase and maintain U.S. flags for the town. However, Jandreau Jr. said the main purpose of the annual barbecues is to bring the community together.

“After the school closed, we wanted to make sure there were events that kept on going on in town. The barbecue is a good reason to bring people out of their homes for a good meal together,” he said. “People usually know they can get some good food when they come to St. Francis.” 

“Thank you to everyone who participated in this successful Chicken barbecue, be it you bought a ticket and came and enjoyed the awesome food, music and company of family and friends, you volunteered your time or you visited our little community library,” said Friends of St. Francis President Cindy Jandreau. “It was a very successful day. We are very fortunate to have an awesome bunch of volunteers.Thank you very much for making St. Francis a better place.”
