50 Years Ago — July 31, 1969

   Frenchville Man Promoted — Paul L. Sirois, son of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Sirois, was recently promoted to Specialist 5. Sirois has been in Vietnam since November of 1968 with the 85th Maintenance Company in DaNang.

Head Start Pupils Visit Dentist — The Madawaska Head Start boys and girls went for dental checkups at Dr. Noman Cyr’s office in Fort Kent. Miss Marietta Martin, Mrs. Theresa Thibeault and Mrs. Alphena Ayotte’s class all visited the dental office. On the visit, Dr. Cyr explained to the children what he was going to do with the different instruments he would use. After the examination, each child was given a toothbrush.

 25 Years Ago — August 3, 1994 

Moving Vietnam Wall Coming To Madawaska — The names of 18 St. John Valley men are engraved on The Wall, as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., is familiarly known. A replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, The Moving Wall is approximately half the size of the original. The Moving Wall will be in Bicentennial Park on 12th Avenue.

Caribou Weather Station Set To Close“They are transferring the career civil service individuals out,” said Randy Revasio, meteorologist technician from the Caribou Weather Station, he said this in regard to the preparation of the station’s closure. Revasio said the nearest weather station will then be in Portland.

10 Years Ago — July 29, 2009

Starting Position — Austin Theriault, 15, of Fort Kent recently qualified for a guaranteed starting position in the “4-Cylinder Nationals” race on August 2 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine. He qualified while racing at Spud Speedway on July 12, which was one of many pre-qualifying races throughout New England this racing season.
