Van Buren athletes honored for effort
VAN BUREN, Maine — Van Buren District Secondary School honored student athletes Thursday evening in the high school cafeteria with an ice cream social and awards ceremony to close out the basketball season.
Fifty athletes from grades 5 through 12 attended the ceremony with their parents to celebrate personal achievements over the season. Van Buren Athletic Director Kylie Lapierre said she was “extremely proud” of the students.
After a dry spell, the boys varsity basketball team made it to Bangor to compete this year and Lapierre said it was an “amazing experience for them. Meanwhile, she said the varsity girls basketball team improved from last year.
“It’s nice to see the growth from year to year,” she said. “I am looking forward to watching what they do next year.”
The middle school athletes also were recognized at the awards ceremony and Lapierre said both teams had good seasons. She is looking forward to seeing their continued growth as well.
“I would also like to give a special thanks to the coaches, athletes and their parents for their time and dedication to our athletic program,” she said.
