Bengal volleyball nets weekend wins

FORT KENT, Maine — The University of Maine at Fort Kent women’s volleyball team swept Unity College in straight sets Friday, Sept. 21, in both matches (25-8, 25-8, 25-6), to keep UMFK undefeated on Homecoming Weekend.

According to Fletcher Brown, UMFK sports information officer, In the first match of the evening, the Bengals never trailed as the team cohesiveness proved strong. Payton Spragling set up Luse Lumas repeatedly for powerful kills over the net, racking up the point for UMFK. Marisol Kirkendall also contributed stellar defense diving all over the floor to keep loose balls alive.

In the second match, UMFK triumphed over the visiting Rams in straight sets again (25-8, 25-7, 25-11) as a variety of Bengals got in on the scoring action. Ericka Gutierrez, Rachel Nance, Vanessa Lopez and Justine McCorkle all showed flashes of brilliance at the net scoring for the Bengals, Brown said. Ashlyn Ferreria, Haley West and Beatriz Garrido all contributed on the defensive end in an incredible display of hustle, never letting the visiting Rams get past 11 points.   

On Sunday, Sept. 23, the Bengals defeated Unity College in three sets (25-17, 25-13, 25-20) and Green Mountain College in three sets as well (25-14, 25-12, 25-9). Both matches were hosted by Unity College on their campus.

Head Coach Selina Castro said, “I am pleased with the results of this weekend, I’m hoping we can keep up this momentum for the remainder of the season as we get closer to our goal of earning a spot at the National Tournament.”

The Bengals’ record now moves to 12 wins and 3 losses. The Bengals have a week off before they host the University of Maine at Machias, at home in The Jungle on Sept. 30.
