First Mile Brewing Co. celebrates early success

FORT KENT, Maine — The owners of First Mile Brewing Co. and their families, along with many friends and customers celebrated the success of the Fort Kent craft beer business with a ribbon-cutting event on Friday.

Co-owners David Saucier, Travis Jandreau, Travis Guy, Matt Deprey and Dr. Rodney Lahren, opened the brewery in November.

Through word of mouth from satisfied customers, First Mile Brewing Co. has achieved such success that the owners are talking about expanding their operation.

“We are planning on increasing the size of our fermenters in order to increase the amount of finished product we produce per batch.  We are nearing the point where demand is outpacing our supply. Good problem to have I guess, but we want to be able to provide our craft beer to an ever growing area within the valley; hence the increased production,” Guy said Friday.

First Mile sells its homemade craft beers at its brewing facility and bar on Market Street, as well as through the Lonesome Pine Trails ski lodge in Fort Kent.

Visitors from downstate also are making the journey to sample the brews.

“We hear about them bringing our beers when they go home; that’s started getting back to us,” said head-brewer Matt Deprey. “We heard comments about our beers being better than the average beer in Portland.”

Fort Kent town manager Don Guimond, who attended Friday’s ribbon cutting celebration that the Greater Fort Kent Area Chamber of Commerce hosted, said what is good for First Mile Brewing Co. is also good for Fort Kent.

“The five partners and their families are to be commended for their efforts to pool their resources and talents to bring this new venture to our community,” Guimond said. “Small business is the backbone of our community.  Every large business starts off as a small business. Based on what they have done and the support they have received, the future looks bright for First Mile Brewery.”

The craft beer brewery, which also offers free Wi-Fi, is open 3:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday.

The brewery also is available for private parties and some merchandise, such as hats and shirts with the First Mile Brewing Co. logo, is sold at the business.
