Owls fall to Pirates in prelim Class C girls playoff round

MADAWASKA, Maine — The ninth-seeded Madawaska Owls let an 18-7 first-quarter lead slip away in Monday night’s preliminary game, allowing the eighth-seeded Piscataquis Community High School Pirates to secure the 48-39 win and advance to the C North quarterfinal round.

Erin Speed lead the way for PCHS with 22 points, including shooting 11 for 12 from the free-throw line. Olivia Riitano chipped in with 10 points.

Brianne Thibeault scored a high of 13 points for Madawaska and teammates Hannah Nadeau and Jenna Dugal put in nine points each.

The Owls (12-7) clung to a 23-19 lead heading into halftime. The home court Pirates (15-4) then outscored the Owls 19 to 8 in the third and 10 to 8 in the final quarter to surge ahead for the playoff victory.

Piscataquis moves on to play top-seeded and undefeated Houlton (18-0) on Feb. 20 in Bangor.
