Winter snows inspire Van Buren artist

Cynthia Roy has been working on this sculpture of the comedian Jeff Dunham character, “Achmed,” for almost a month. Nature has provided ample snow for the Van Buren amateur artist to work with this year. “I just do it for fun,” Roy said Wednesday. Last year Roy had sculpted a dragon in her yard, which caught the attention of passersby, including members of the local snowmobile club, who posted photos on the club’s Facebook page. Roy has entered a few snow sculpting contests in the past, earning third place at a Cary Medical Center competition several years ago, she said. Roy plans on putting the finishing touches on her new sculpture, then will use ashes from her wood stove to add shading and details. On a related note, Jeff Dunham will perform Feb. 18 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
