Visiting Ashland Hornets take two against Van Buren Crusaders

VAN BUREN, Maine — Bailey Clark scored a game-high 21 points on Thursday and Dylan Haley and Steven Bellanceau each netted 12 to lead the Ashland Hornets to a 52-40 basketball victory against the home team Van Buren Crusaders.

Luc Perreault’s 14 points led the Van Buren boys with Colby Lavoie and Brandon Sytulek adding nine apiece.

The teams were evenly matched through two quarters, with Ashland clinging to an 18-16 lead at the half. The Crusaders were only able to score eight pints in the third quarter, though, and were unable to climb back into the game.

Ashland improved to 2-8 with the win. The Van Buren boys dropped to 2-8 with the loss.

On the girls’ side Megan Cote scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Thursday, as Ashland improved to 6-5 with a 56-36 win against Van Buren.

Emma Lajoie’s 12 points and game-high 14 rebounds paced the 2-7 Crusaders. Brooke Caron scored eight points and Tiffany Morrow and Leah Gendreau had seven apiece.

For the Hornets, Jamie Poulin scored 14 points, Morgan Doughty added 12 and Amber Chasse contributed nine points and 10 rebounds.

Ashland jumped out to a 17-9 lead after one quarter. The Crusaders were still within nine points after three quarters, but the Hornets pulled away in the final frame.

The Crusader teams next take on East Grand in an away game on Friday.
