Eagle Scout candidate renovates Allagash River campsite

An enthusiastic 15-year-old member of Fort Kent Boy Scout Troop 189 spent three weeks in October working on a project at the West Twin Brook campsite on the Allagash River in hopes of obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout.

Zachery Chasse of Fort Kent has been a Boy Scout for five years and said he enjoys the leadership challenges the organization offers.

“I want to become an Eagle Scout because when I started scouting, I looked up to Eagle Scouts and I want younger scouts to look up to me,” he said.

An avid outdoorsman who enjoys fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling, Chasse said he chose to work on the West Twin Brook campsite for his Eagle Scout project because it best combined his passions for scouting and the outdoors.

“I chose this for my project because I love camping in the North Maine Woods and I thought it would be a good way to give back to them,” Chasse said. “The project entailed digging an outhouse hole, placing an outhouse, (refurbishing) the fireplace and rock steps leading to the river, building a shelter and a picnic table, and doing some brush clearing.”

A sophomore at Fort Kent Community High School who aspires to become a mechanical engineer, Chasse said he did not face any major challenges while completing the project, and appreciated the support of fellow Troop 189 members as well as family members and friends who helped him organize tools and work on the job site.

Chasse worked on the project from  Oct. 7 until Oct. 29.

Chasse’s parents are Larry and Michelle Chasse of Fort Kent.

“They have helped me achieve my goals by always being there for me and helping me along the way,” Zachery Chasse said.

Chasse said he now needs to complete some merit badges and paperwork to finish earning his Eagle Scout rank.

The West Twin Brook Campsite is located about 6 miles upriver from the Town of Allagash, on the west side of the Allagash River and is accessible from the Michaud Farm Road, according to Al Cowperthwaite, executive director of North Maine Woods, Inc.
