PRESQUE ISLE -From December 28 to 30, the Nordic Heritage Center played host to the U.S. Biathlon Youth and Junior Team Trials. The competition allowed for the selection of the athletes to represent the U.S. later this winter at the World Youth and Junior Championship event also occurring  at the Nordic Heritage Center.

AROOSTOOK COUNTY - There several areas in Aroostook County where snowmobile enthusiasts should use greater caution, but overall the season is fully open, active day and night, and making riders happy across the crown of Maine.

According to Kathy Mazzuchelli at the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department, riders need to be aware of the following areas and situations.

ST. JOHN VALLEY /Northern Aroostook -Overall..there has been another foot of powder with a small amount of sleet, giving the snowcover some moisture so early season that sledding is starting off great , according to Kathy Mazzuchelli at the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department.

FORT KENT - Single digits on the thermometer and a light dusting of snow set the course for this week's Nordic ski meet at 10th Mountain Lodge in Fort Kent. Athletes represented six schools at Thursday's meet, which comprised two races, a morning classic style race followed by a freestyle race in the afternoon. Both races were a distance of 3.1K.

FORT KENT –Ski teams came from across Aroostook County to compete at Lonesome Pine Trails on Saturday, December 21, but Fort Kent took home first place in all the group and individual categories.

For the girl's giant slalom race in the morning, Alexa Pelletier, Rudy Martin and Danielle Ouellette took the top three spots, and Fort Kent Community High School took all five top positions.

FORT KENT/Presque Isle -Julie Daigle, a local civic leader and expert timing professional for winter sports, is looking for a few good men and women to assist her with qualifying races for a biathlon ski event, the Junior/Youth Biathlon World Championships USA Team Trials, that organizers are holding in Presque Isle.

ST. JOHN VALLEY – Fort Kent Police Chief Kenneth Michaud said on Wednesday, December 18, that snowmobile trails are open in Fort Kent and in Frenchville, but he cautioned that riders should be careful on bodies of water.

He said, “The river's still not froze.”

FORT KENT -The Fort Kent Recreation and Parks Department will be opening the Jalbert Park Skating Rink for this season on Saturday, December 21, weather permitting.

Public skating occurs on Fridays from 6 - 9 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays from 1 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 9 p.m..

The rink will hold additional hours on days without school (workshops) and vacation weeks Monday through Fridays 1 to 4 p.m.
