FORT KENT - Plenty of folks followed a path of orange duck feet to walk America's First Mile on Friday, Aug. 8 in Fort Kent.

The Greater Fort Kent Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored the walk, according to Chamber Executive Director Skyla Hamilton. "We're promoting America's First Mile and want to make it a trademark statement so more people will come to the area specifically to visit to help expand commerce. We want to showcase Fort Kent and put it on the big stage," she said.

MADAWASKA– Members with the Madawaska on the Move Coalition recently unveiled a pioneer urban walking trail on Fox Street and French Street in Madawaska named “Marden’s to Multi.” The promotion of the trail will coincide with the start of the Congrès mondial acadien on Aug. 8.

FORT KENT- Organizers of this year's Tour de la Vallee fundraiser—which takes place on Sunday, Aug. 10—have announced changes to this year's event. What was historically a bicycle race to raise money for the Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund, will now include options for participants to walk or run 3, 5, or 10 miles, according to Northern Maine Medical Center spokesperson Joanne Fortin.

FORT KENT– A total of 65 participants ran, walked or took a ride in the 2014 UMFK Summer Fun Run. The University of Maine at Fort Kent, Daigle and Houghton, Nadeau Logging Inc. and Albert’s Jewelry sponsored the event that took place on Saturday Aug. 2. The five kilometer (5K) race attracted people of all ages and abilities with proceeds going to the Dylan R. Levesque Memorial Scholarship Fund.

ST. JOHN VALLEY – After much preparation, organizers have prepared the St. John Valley for the 2014 World Acadian Congress (Congrès mondial acadien) that will take place Aug. 8-24. This year is the fifth iteration of the congress, and is the first time that Maine and Canada will host the event together.
