EAGLE LAKE - On Saturday, Aug. 16, at the mud bog fundraiser it sponsors, the Eagle Lake Fire Department jumped into action when flames shot out from a competing truck containing a father and his two children.

Dave Chouinard was at the end of his run on the 300 foot course when the crowd watching from the bank to the left of his truck collectively gasped.

"Fire!" shouted multiple members of the crowd.

"There are kids in that truck. Get them out of there," screamed a concerned spectator.

To the Editor,

Growing up in Aroostook County was a blessing I never truly grasped until I had some years behind me. It gave me some qualities I hold dear—an unwavering work ethic, a respect for community and for family, and a deep rooted stewardship for the natural environment and the creatures in it. Being from “The County” made me care about things in a way people “from away” don’t quite understand.

An Allagash Wilderness Waterway (AWW) canoe expedition is truly a trip back in time. The waterway is much the same today as it was when Henry David Thoreau visited the area 150 years ago. The Allagash headwater lakes are lined with huge white pine and spruce that dominate the shorelines and the river is subject to the never-ending sound of moving water as it rushes to the sea. These are just some of the sights and sounds of nature that one will experience on an AWW canoe trip.
