AROOSTOOK COUNTY – On Aug. 27, a coalition of area nonprofit organizations announced a new and exciting hands-on program that will help County kids make better and healthier choices early on. The program, Discovery Days, is a 7 week series of hour long sessions that will run on consecutive Saturday mornings this fall—beginning Saturday, Sept. 27.

FORT KENT- The Fort Kent Track and Field Teams participated in an Invitational Cross Country Race on Aug. 27 in Fort Kent. The length of the track was 3 miles. The Fort Kent Teams competed against Washburn, Limestone, and Greater Houlton Christian Academy.

FORT KENT – For dog owners who need help with pooch conduct or bad habits, the Fort Kent Recreation and Parks Department will begin offering its Dog Obedience School on Wednesday, Sept. 3. Dog owners must bring written proof of their dog's vaccinations.

All classes will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Jalbert Park Skating Rink Area on Pleasant Street. The class will run from Sept. 3-24 on Wednesday evenings, and will occur regardless of inclement weather.

However, Ida Begin, an Allagash native and current resident of Forest Hill Manor, did just that on Sunday, Aug. 3, along with her granddaughters Angelina Dubourg and Candy Hafford.

BANGOR – USDA Rural Development State Director Virginia Manuel recently announced that three Maine community facilities will receive funding to help support community wellness, upgrade a tribal administrative building, and dental healthcare.

The USDA Rural Development’s Community Facility Programs is providing the funding, which assists in the construction, expansion, or improvement of rural community facilities for health care, public safety, and community and public services.

FORT KENT – Fitness, fun, and color are coming to Fort Kent. With color runs being popular in southern parts of the state, Color ME is a color run for the St. John Valley. Organizers have designed Color ME for all ages and abilities of participants—whether running or walking—and is not timed. Participants will leave covered in multiple colors.

FRENCHVILLE- Folks of all ages enjoyed the Festival Chautauqua on Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Frenchville Community Center. A variety of musical acts provided entertainment outdoors throughout the afternoon while artisans displayed their works of art within the center's building and vendors provided grilled foods and iced treats to combat one of the this year's hot summer days in the Valley.

FORT KENT- The University of Maine at Fort Kent is looking for anyone interested in placing an entry in the homecoming-scarecrow parade at 11 a.m. on Sept. 20. The parade is one of the most popular events of the annual UMFK Homecoming and the Greater Fort Kent Area Chamber of Commerce Scarecrow Festival that takes place Sept. 19-21.
