Dollars and Sense Financial Fair will promote financial fitness in Valley sixth graders

FORT KENT- Organizers will hold the Dollars and Sense Financial Fair for St. John Valley sixth graders on Thursday, April 26 at the University of Maine at Fort Kent Sports Center.


The event is a collaboration of the UMFK/Acadia Federal Credit Union Financial Literacy Project.

There will be a welcoming session from 9:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The fair's first session will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will include approximately 80 students from Van Buren, Madawaska, and the Dr. Levesque School in Frenchville. The second session will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will include approximately 68 students from Fort Kent, Eagle Lake, and Wallagrass.

Coordinator George Bragdon, who is from Madawaska, works for the Americorps VISTA program. He said Americorps VISTA is dedicated to combatting poverty in the U.S. He works for a program within Americorps VISTA called the Maine Campus Compact, which aims to inrease civic engagemengt among college students and alleviate poverty by helping kids who might not get to college on their own gain access to college.

"The route we are taking is through good financial health," Bragdon said.

He said the emphasis of the fair is on financial fitness, with a small portion of the event directed towards helping the students begin to think about going to college.
