ST. JOHN VALLEY- The hunting blogosphere is buzzing with talk of Mainers who have spotted white-tailed deer with “radio collars” around their necks. The collars are part of a study being conducted by research biologists at theUniversity ofMaine at Fort Kent (UMFK).
BANGOR – The 2012 American Folk Festival, held on the Bangor Waterfront August 24 through 26, will once again feature a Children’s Village, specifically geared toward children and families. The Children’s Villageis an opportunity for kids and parents alike to experience many dimensions of a variety of cultures, with fun and interactive programming designed to educate and entertain all ages.
FORT KENT – Financial Professionals Kelly Martin and George Dumond leveraged their volunteer time with the 10th Mountain Ski Club during the 2011 World Cup Biathlon Championships to donate $500 to the Ski Club through a grant from The Prudential Foundation.
FORT KENT– Susan Smith of Eagle Lake missed a sharp turn on North Perley Brook and hit Alfie Roy’s house in an accident that occurred on August 18, at approximately 1 p.m.
The accident resulted in no injuries and the police department filed no charges.
ST. JOHN VALLEY- Daniel Roy of Madawaska ran 80 miles of the Tour de la Vallée route this past Saturday and Sunday to raise money for the Edgar J. Paradis Fund in honor of his uncle.
The Tour de la Vallée is an annual bicycle tour of the St. John Valley that administrators of the Edgar J. Paradis Fund conduct. This was the tour’s 22nd year.
FORT KENT– The family of Rose Charette, with the support of University of Maine at Fort Kent Foundation and UMFK administrators, established the Rose M. (Gagnon) Charette Scholarship in 2012 to support students at UMFK enrolled in the Elementary Education program. Rose’s children established the scholarship to honor her memory and to honor her dedication to the teaching profession.
ST. JOHN VALLEY- Northern Aroostook County Marine Corps Reserve Motorcycle Ride is holding their First Annual Toys for Tots Ride on Sunday, September 2.
AROOSTYOOK COUNTY – Patrol Sergeant Forrest Dudley said that sheriff’s deputies are still searching for New Sweden resident Scott R. Plourde, 42, who ran from officers during a stop last Thursday.
Dudley said the officers had conducted a “felony stop” for Plourde in order to assist Caribou police who had a warrant out for his arrest on a variety of charges, including a violation of protection from abuse.
PORTAGE –On Sunday, August 19, several members of the committee planning the International Sled Dog Races randomly drew the bib numbers for the mushers registered for the 2013 races.
ST. JOHN VALLEY– Nicolle Ashley Lugdon, one of the victims in a triple homicide that occurred in Bangor last week was a 2006 graduate of Madawaska High School and attended the University of Maine in Fort Kent before relocating to the Bangor area. The people who knew her in the St. John Valley want to share the many positive and loving memories they have of a girl whose life ended tragically and too soon.
FORT KENT- The University of Maine at Fort Kent is set to host a week of preseason men’s and women’s soccer matches on Alumni Memorial Field in Fort Kent, Maine beginning on Monday, August 20. UMFK will host two CIS Canadian Schools during the week in preparation for their regular season.
FRENCHVILLE – On Saturday, August 18, at the Northern Aroostook Regional Airport's 2012 Fly-In and Airshow, race car driver Austin Theriault raced a Pitts S2-B aircraft while driving a 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra GT 650hp.
The vehicle, which Pelltier Ford of Fort Kent provided, reached 160 m.p.h. on the runway.
ST. AGATHA - An accident on Route 162 in St. Agatha interrupted a trip to a soccer game for one couple this morning, but everyone was able to walk away from the incident uninjured, though a bit shaken up.
AROOSTOOK COUNTY - Local law enforcement organizations and community partners announced the fourth wave for the underage drinking enforcement and education campaign called “Underage Drinking. Adult Consequences.” which began August 10 and will run through August 26.
FORT KENT –Police in Fort Kent reported that someone abandoned a mother cat and three kittens along Route 1 in a closed pet carrier during the hottest part of the day on Friday, August 18.
MADAWASKA- On July 25, Kara Gendreau, daughter of Mark and Paula Gendreau, and Harley Berube, daughter of Ray and Crystal Berube, of Madawaska set forth on a mission to assist the Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund. They set up a lemonade stand in front of one of their homes on Main Street and sold for $26.50 worth of lemonade. Although they planned to sell their lemonade for $.50, many generous, thirst quenched passersby gave $1. This boosted their sales.
ST. FRANCIS - Joshua Pelletier and Danielle Cote are proud to announce the birth of their son Alec Pelletier on August 14, 2012 at Northern Maine Medical Center. Alec’s maternal grandparents are Dennis Cote from St. David and Denise Duperre Cote from Madawaska. His paternal grandparents are John and Wanda Pelletier of St. John Plantation.

VAN BUREN - Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine has named Brandon Ouellette of Van Buren a Sarah and James Bowdoin Scholar (Dean’s List). The title of Sarah and James Bowdoin Scholar is awarded to the top 20 percent of each class. Brandon is the son of Lee and Lori (Lajoie) Ouellette, both of Van Buren. He is planning on majoring in psychology, with a minor in economics.
FORT KENT – A fender bender in front of the St. Louis Catholic Church on East Main Street resulted in approximately $2000 worth of damage to a Ford pickup driven by Wallace Bouchard of Fort Kent. The accident caused no injuries.
AROOSTOOK COUNTY– The public is encouraged to join The Aroostook Medical Center (TAMC) and the American Red Cross for a special centennial blood drive on Tuesday, August 28 at A.R. Gould Memorial Hospital in Presque Isle. In celebration of TAMC’s centennial, blood drive coordinators are setting a goal of collecting 100 viable pints of blood.
NEW SWEDEN -The region was abuzz yesterday as law enforcement officers from a variety of state and federal agencies conducted a manhunt for a New Sweden man.
According to a brief email from the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, officers are looking for the whereabouts of Scott R Plourde, a 42-year old man from New Sweden.

MADAWASKA – Sheets of aspenite cover an opening in the front of Family Dollar in Madawaska this morning where yesterday a plate glass storefront allowed passersby to see inside the store until a car smashed through the window for the second time in the second such incident at the same store in the past few years.
FORT KENT- Its school time again in the St. John Valley, and the University of Maine at Fort Kent is expecting a large incoming class.
They are planning on welcoming the new incoming students with a fun and exciting revitalized orientation, with up to 200 students plus their families expected to attend. Some of the activities planned include a family dinner during which a campus favorite, Courtney Birt, will sing.
PRESQUE ISLE –The University of Maine at Presque Isle is gearing up for the 2012-2013 academic year and is reminding all new incoming students that the university will hold orientation later this month.

FORT KENT/SAD 27 – Tuesday, August 14, SAD 27 school board members voted six-to-one to move the dates of the two week-long potato harvest break in area schools from beginning on September 14 to beginning on September 21.
ST. JOHN VALLEY – Blue Potato is a coming-of-age film that tells a story about the choices those of us who live in small-town, rural parts of the country like the St. John Valley have to make when facing the future as a young adult: Do we stay and live with presumably limited economic opportunities, but a relative amount of familiarity and context in those areas, or do we go on to the adventure and unknown of the wide world and potentially also the loss of community, family, and ethnic/group identity?
FORT KENT– When Dave and Amy Freeman of Minnesota kayaked into Fort Kent from Pohénégamook via Glazier Lake, they were surprised to enter the St. John Valley during the busiest season for summer festivals in the area. The Ploye Festival and the World’s Biggest Ploye may have become the highlight of their trip, said Dave, during an educational journey for the Wilderness Classroom, a non-profit organization, which has included kayaking next to humpbacked whales along the Alaskan coast.
AROOSTOOK COUNTY– Organizers have cancelled plans for a golf tournament during this year’s Crown of Maine Balloon Festival due to a low number of golfers registering for the event. Instead, organizers with The Aroostook Medical Center are planning to host a “lite version” of the Spuddy Recovery Triathlon on Main Street in downtown Presque Isle during the Street Fair on Thursday, August 23.

FORTKENT – A Fort Kent man who eluded the police for four days after allegedly assaulting his 33-year-old ex-girlfriend turned himself in yesterday, said Fort Kent Police Chief Kenneth Michaud.

FORT KENT – Over 50 residents and concerned citizens attended the town council meeting on August 13 in order to voice their opinions about whether to close Charette Hill Road to ATV traffic after town council members voted to open it and other public roads as access routes in April of this year.

FORT KENT – Sunday evening, August 12, the 9th Annual Fort Kent International Muskie Derby successfully wrapped up. Out of 334 registrations during the three-day event, 15 adult fishermen and women took home cash prizes for muskie catches, five fishermen took home cash prizes for bass catches, and one child caught a muskie and brought home a cash prize.
T13 R8 WELS– On August 8, an unnamed individual flying to his camp near Portage Lake called a forest fire in to the state police, who subsequently contacted the Maine Forest Service to respond to it. Originating just before the big fire near Chamberlain Lake, slightly over one and a half acres burned as a result of this fire. It caused no injuries or structural damages.

AGATHA/FRENCHVILLE- St. Agatha and Frenchville community leaders will gather with officials from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and USDA Rural Development for a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, August 21 at 11 a.m. to honor the beginning of a project that will affect both towns - the combination of the St. Agatha and Frenchville wastewater treatment facilities.
MAINE – Sunday, August 12, Governor Paul LePage and First Lady Ann LePage joined Brigadier General Burke Whitman, Lieutenant General Steven Hummer, and members of Maine’s congressional delegation in attending the dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Marine Corps Reserve Training Center in Brunswick.
FORT KENT - Despite a constant drizzle that would occasionally spike to pouring rain on Friday evening, the Bouchard family managed to create their humongous ploye for the hundreds of spectators that gathered for the annual exhibition. After the Bouchard family cooked their ploye, everyone was able to enjoy a bite of the iconic treat.
ST. DAVID - Canoeists reenacting the historical Acadian Cross landing in St. David today were able to shave a couple of hundred feet off of their trip down the St. John River to the Acadian Cross site in St. David due to drastically low river levels.
FORT KENT– Jay Paradis of J and P Carpentry in Fort Kent is stepping up to help the Fort Kent Community High School by donating some of his time and the use of his crane truck to contruct the new scoreboard shed on the high school soccer field. Some of his family and friends from Connecticut took time off from their jobs and drove up to Fort Kent to help Paradis complete the project for the community.
