This play is one of Oscar Wilde’s most enduring works that has two young men making up fictitious identities to thwart Victorian social conventions and institutions. Wilde’s wit takes aims at marriage, social standing, and wealth. Two young men woo two young women under the name of Earnest are shocked when their lovely young ladies will only accept someone named “Earnest.” Laugh at their antics, in unraveling the truth, outwitting the “gorgon” society matron and winning their ladies for “better or worse.”
