VAN BUREN - Van Buren now has a new store where health conscious shoppers can buy products on the more natural side.

From organic ketchup to birdhouses, the Health Wellness and Gift Shop offers a wide variety of products and services. Gluten free foods and primitives along with organic and fair trade products are just a small part of what the store provides. Owners held the official store opening on November 25, 2011.

"The goal is just for people to be healthier," said owner Tammy Michaud. "I'm probably only 30 percent done setting everything up at this point, but it won't be long now."

Michaud, who is an RN, has worked in nursing for 14 years and currently works at Borderview Nursing Home in Van Buren.

"I've seen what happens to people’s health...and there are things people can do to solve so many of these seemly hopeless health problems."

Using a hair analysis technique, Michaud  provides people with insight on their health situation based on the minerals found in the person’s hair.

"There is always an imbalance, and this is one of the best ways to catch something before it occurs," she said. “There are people out there who have suffered their whole lives, and now using some of these methods they are finding relief."

Michaud has also started her own health program called the PH Connection, and provides health consultations out of an office at the store. She will continue to further her training to provide alternative treatments for people suffering from chronic pain, fatigue, and other illnesses.

This is exactly what Fort Kent needs

A few years ago Dr. Lahren was going to open an organic foods store where the old railroad station used to be. He fixed the place up and his idea to open the store never materialized. I always wondered why he spent so much money in fixing the building and stopped short of opening for business.
