Scooting around town, Hebert shows off new, blue 3-wheeler

MADAWASKA– Some people might say that 87-year-old Nivard Hebert has a thing for scooters – and they’d be right.

Hebert has lived in Madawaska his entire life except for the time he served in the military before he married Lena Hebert and moved into his home on Nivard Street. Sometime between 1965 and 1970, Hebert bought his first scooter. Since then people in Madawaska have come accustomed to seeing Hebert scooting around town, but he has ventured farther.

“I’ve been as far as Presque Isle on the second one I had,” said Hebert.

Four scooters later and Hebert has purchased his first three-wheel scooter. He bought the machine for its stability, but he said the rough roads around town have him a bit nervous to take it too far. He’s put 47 miles on it since he bought it earlier this summer.

Nivard and Lena married in 1946 and they do a lot together.

“We fight, we’ve done everything in the book, and then we go to bed and everything is alright,” said Lena.

But there seems to be one thing that Lena has decided Nivard can do on his own.

“I was expecting the wife would ride with me, but I don’t think she’ll like it,” said Hebert.

“No way,” she agreed.

Nivard said that he is slowly becoming familiar with the new machine and how it rides.

“It took me a week or so, but I got to handle it on the road,” he said.

He refuses to let even the construction in town slow him down, saying, “I’ll just stay in front of the trucks.”
