NMMC welcomes new addition to the Emergency Department
FORT KENT - Northern Maine Medical Center is pleased to introduce its newest Emergency Department physician, Dr. Walter Doerfler.
“NMMC is fortunate to bring on board a physician with varied experience to complement our ED provider team,” said Peter Sirois, NMMC CEO.
Dr. Doerfler was raised in Vienna, Austria where he attended medical school prior to moving to the United States in 1996 where he continued his medical education. He obtained a degree in Osteopathic Medicine in 2000 from the University of New England and became Board Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine in 2006.
Professional memberships include the Maine Medical Association and the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Doerfler’s academic experience includes work as a clinical instructor at Tufts University School of Medicine in 1996. He was also a course instructor in human anatomy at the College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of New England.
Prior to coming to NMMC, he practiced family medicine in Searsport, Belfast, and Orono. Most recently, since 2008, Doerfler worked as a provider in the Emergency Department at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft.
His special interests include donating time to third world countries.
Doerfler says, “I have been visiting Honduras on a yearly basis providing medical care in rural areas. I hope to continue and expand this endeavor.”
His passion for making a difference in this area of medicine is what originally led him to choosing the medical field as a career path.
Doerfler went on to say, “I am very interested in third world medical care.”
Closer to home, Doerfler has been a Medical Examiner for the State of Maine since 2001.
Doerfler is the father of a two-year-old son with a second child on the way. He resides in Cushing, Maine with his family. Outside interests include cabinet making, which he learned when he first moved to the United States. He also has an interest in languages and is fluent in German.
