PondFest offers early Fourth of July celebration in Wallagrass

WALLAGRASS, Maine — The sixth annual PondFest will offer an early Fourth of July celebration in Wallagrass on Saturday, June 29.

The Wallagrass/Soldier Pond Revitalization Committee hosts the family friendly, daylong celebration each year to raise funds for community improvement efforts.

PondFest 2019 will offer many free activities throughout the day, including children’s games, a bouncy house, face painting, crafts and a parade.

The River Ukes and other performers will donate their talents to perform, and hot dogs, hamburgers, chili and beans will be for sale throughout the day. Cool pops and watermelon will be provided free to children all day, as will neon necklaces and bracelets.

Children will have the opportunity to race live frogs and this is not a BYOF (bring your own frog) event. PondFest organizer Elaine Desjardins said there will be plenty of frogs available for participants.

“If you don’t have a frog my grandson will provide you with one; he’s a real frog catcher,” Desjardins said.

A popular event at PondFest, the Pirate Duck Race will be back this year.

The duck race was one of the Revitalization Committee’s biggest fundraisers last year, according to Desjardins. People can purchase little rubber ducks, which event organizers will dump off the Soldier Pond Bridge. The fastest floating duck wins. The ducks will be available at the PondFest, but also can be purchased ahead of time at Lake Road Grocery in Wallagrass or at the Wallagrass Town Office at $5 for two ducks or five ducks for $10.

A horse and wagon ride originally scheduled may not take place this year, although organizers hope that activity will be available.

As in previous years, an evening fireworks display will top off PondFest 2019.

“We’re supposed to have a really good show this year,” Desjardins said. “We had a spectacular show last year and it’s been getting better every year.”

PondFest 2019 will take place Saturday, June 29, in the area of the Soldier Pond boat landing on Church Street in Wallagrass, from 10:30 a.m. until the last fireworks flies.

Anyone interested in participating in the parade should call Elaine Desjardins at (207) 834-5189.
