50 Years Ago — June 19, 1969

   Ft. Kent School Children Dine On Centennial Fare — Centennial spirit really struck the St. Louis School cafeteria last week when the cooks, dressed in their centennial garb, showed up for work with an old-fashioned meal all planned for that day. On the menu were baked beans, buckwheat pancakes, and molasses cake.

Headstart Highlights  — The Van Buren Full Year Head Start children took a field trip to the post office June 12, where they mailed cards to their parents. A tour of the office was given by Gerald Gagnon. Before the youngsters returned to school they were all treated to a Dairy Freeze.

25 Years Ago — June 22, 1994

Price of Times To Increase — The price of the St. John Valley Times sold at stores, newsstands and by carriers will be 60 cents per copy starting with the issue of July 6, 1994. Announcement of the newsstands and carrier price increase, the first since July 4, 1990, was made by Emery L. Labbe, publisher. Three other weeklies in Aroostook County have raised the price of their newspapers to 60 cents a copy.

Top Two — Madawaska High School graduates Robin Chasse and Tracy Fongemie, were the two top students in the School’s graduating class of 1994. Fongemie maintained the highest average during her high school career; Chasse finished with the second highest average.

10 Years Ago — June 17, 2009

We All Scream For Ice Cream — Fourth and fifth graders at Madawaska Elementary School celebrated receiving national, state, and local recognition June 10 for their efforts on spreading energy awareness in their communities through the Be Energywise Program. Nancy Chandler from Maine Public Service was on hand to present the awards and provide the ice cream to honor the students for their winning entry.
